Introduction on Boston College Head Coach
Boston College has appointed Bill O’Brien as its new head coach, a Massachusetts native with extensive NFL experience and strong local ties.
O’Brien, who took the Ohio State offensive coordinator job, was interviewed in person at Boston College as one of three candidates to travel to Massachusetts for interviews.
Eagles athletic director Blake James stated that the team prioritized finding a coach who aligns with their mission and vision, has a plan for greatness both on and off the field, and will work tirelessly to elevate BC football.
O’Brien, a former head coach of Penn State and the Houston Texans, is best known in Boston for his stints with the New England Patriots, where he served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2007 to 2023.
James praised Bill as a gifted leader with success as a head coach and coordinator at collegiate and NFL levels, citing his passion for teaching football and developing young men as a perfect fit for Boston College.
O’Brien, who grew up in Andover, has a son, Michael, who plays college baseball at Tufts. His family plans to stay in the Boston area while he works in Columbus, allowing him to be closer to his family.
Bill O’Brien, a graduate of Boston College and St. John’s Prep, played football at Brown University and began his coaching career at the school, showcasing his strong connections to the area.
Jeff Hafley has been replaced by O’Brien as the defensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers. Boston College’s 2023 season was successful, with a 7-6 record. O’Brien has a strong reputation as a quarterback tutor, having worked with Bobby Young, Tom Brady, and DeShaun Watson.

Boston College’s recent struggles, including a lack of wins and a single national ranking since 2008, make quarterback O’Brien an attractive option in the transfer market, as the Eagles have struggled to win eight games in a season since 2009.
O’Brien, who left New England to become head coach at Penn State in 2012, led the program through success both on and off the field. He won Big Ten Coach of the Year and Bear Bryant National Coach of the Year, and he went 15-9 in two seasons.
Ohio State coach Ryan Day has announced his departure from the sport, leaving behind a promising offensive coordinator position. O’Brien, who previously worked as head coach of the Texans, led the team to four playoff appearances and a 52-48 record. His most recent college experience was at Alabama, where he served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach during Young’s Heisman Trophy season. Ohio State coach Ryan Day has also announced his decision to give up play calling in 2024.
